It was midday. I approached the old college dorm for my last time. I had just graduated, and had obtained a private eye’s license on the side, to keep my options open. I opened the door to my dorm room and surveyed the room. To the left was the bed that I had slept in for nearly four years. It looked nothing like the way I had left it. To the right was my close friend, Noah’s, bed. Everything was gone. A kid came by studying the dorm room numbers. He came over to mine. Walking in, he set his luggage on my bed. “Hello,” he said. “Do you know of a person named Adam Schoolfield?” He asked.

“Schofield, and that’s me.” I responded.

“I’m supposed to get my key from you.” I reached into my pocket and pulled out a dull brass key. I looked at it for a moment, tossed it to him, and turned to leave. I went to the parking lot and got inside my Horizon. I waited for a bit, and Noah came and got in too. We left the campus for the last time. We had rented an apartment on Walnut Street, Nanopolis. Unfortunately we rented “sight unseen,” and boy was it a sight. It took us the rest of the day to clean it up.

Time passed until it was nightfall. I sat down in front of the television set. While attempting to turn it on, I broke the knob. I gave up and picked up a paper. I looked through it, “Hey! Did you know that Nixon and his aids were caught bugging the D.N.C.?”

“Adam, look at the date. Nixon and his aids were caught doing that years ago.” I looked at the front of the paper and it said: February 15, 19—. I could not make out the last two numbers it was so old. Noah came out of the adjacent bathroom, attempting to tie his tie. “So, how do I look?”

“Like a penguin on his day off!”

“Well, it just so happens that I have a date tonight, unlike some people I know.”

“Well-er-um, I have more important things to do.”

“Like what?”

“Like, look for a job!”

“In that paper! You’re better off looking for a job as a rocket scientist!”

“Well then, I’ll go buy a new one.”

“With what money? We spent out last dollar buying ’sight unseen’ here.” He said, motioning to the apartment.

“Oh, right.”

“Don’t worry, she’s paying.”

“She who?”

“You know, my date Laura.”

“Oh. Well, I think I’ll turn in.”

“See you later.” He said. He reached up and took the keys to the car. Before I could say anything, he was out the door. I went to the bedroom, put on clean sheets, and went to bed. At midnight, Noah returned to the apartment and did likewise. “Adam, are you awake?” He asked.
