Tricia Downing The next morning the nurse came in to take my temperature. “What’s today’s date?” I asked.

“Why, July 6, 1980.”

“Thanks.”

“No trouble at all.” She said. She took my temperature and left. A little while later the doctor came in and came over to my bed.

“How bad is it, Doc?”

“Well, you’ll live. I think that I’ll be able to let you recover at home.”

“How long will that take?”

“At least a month, then you’ll have to undergo intensive restructuring of your leg muscles.”

“And when can I return to work?”

“In about eight weeks, you’ll be about normal.”

“Eight weeks!!”

“Yes, I’m afraid, eight weeks.”

“Well, thanks, Doc.” I said. The doctor got up and left the room. Looks as though this cast and I are gonna get very acquainted. One month! I thought. I fell asleep, but was awakened when I thought I heard the door open. Peering out of one eye I saw Tricia, dressed in a blouse and skirt. “Tricia?”

“Yes, Adam?”

“What are you here for?”

“Well, Noah thought I should come over to see how you were doing. Also, he wanted me to tell you that your clones are locked up until you decide what to do with them.”

“Noah would have called. What’s really up?”

“I want to tell you that I really care about you.”

“Why thanks, same here.”

“But, I think that you and I are just not meant to be.”

“How come?”

“I don’t know, but I can feel it. It does not mean that we can’t be best friends, does it.”

“Not at all, come here best friend.” I said, opened armed. “I wanna thank you for coming to tell me about the plan. That was very brave of you.”

“Thanks, it was nothing.”

“Nothing, you could have gotten yourself killed. By the way, do you remember anything about the third level of the game?”

“The future? No.”

“All I can remember is something about when it actually occurs I will regain my memory.”

“I don’t remember that at all.”

“Pity. Well, if that’s all …” I started.

“No, that’s not all. Come on in here guys!” She shouted out the door. In came Noah, Laura, Dan, Heidi, Andy, Marie, the other members of my volleyball team, Patrick, and Kate. Also with them were two of my relatives, David and his wife Karin.

“Surprise!” They shouted.
