“Better than that, I’ll show you.” She said, getting up, she went over to a desk. She took out a map and brought it back. “Here they are, deep in the jungle. Someone told them that the gem was there. It’s really with a man named James, and his friend Matt.”
“Where are these guys now?”
“They’re trying to get out of the country to sell the gem.”
“Thanks Amanda, you were a real help.” I said. Getting up, I went toward the door.
“Don’t I get a kiss good-night?” She said as I left. I drove to Noah’s house, where Laura had again fallen under the spell of Noah. The test would be to see if she gravitated toward me or Noah. I walked in the door, and into the living room.
“Noah, I need your help.”
“What is it?”
“Tracy and Kristin are about to run into a trap.”
“What kind of trap?” Just then, Laura came in the door. She looked at me, then him. She then passed out. “Laura?”
“What happened?”
“I don’t know.” Noah said. He went over and felt her pulse. “She’s alive,” he paused, “I’ve got it. You’re smell and my smell shorted each other out. Her brain couldn’t take it, and it turned off.”
“I want you to get ready for a hike through the jungle, and here’s the map we follow.”
“What’s this?” He said, looking at two red marks in the shape of lips, and a message.
“I don’t know. It says: Love forever and always, Amanda. Swell.”
“Well, don’t you worry, I be ready to go first thing in the morning.”
“Okay, I’ll be by to pick you up.” I said. I left his house and returned to my own. Tricia, Karin and Katie were there. I walked in, not knowing who was inside. “Hey, gang!” I called. Tricia and Karin did not react, but Katie came rushing to my side.
“Mr. Schofield, I never realized how attractive you were.” I motioned for Karin to get some grapefruit.
“Now Katie.”
“Oh, Mr. Schofield, could you just kiss me.”
“Kiss you. Katie…”
“Please.”
“KARIN!!” I yelled. I looked at Katie, and brought her over to the sofa, where she sat on my lap. Karin came and gave her some grapefruit.
“Whoa,” Katie said, jumping off my lap. “I’m sorry Mr. Schofield. Do you know when Kristin is coming back?”
“No, Katie, but I’m going after her and Aunt Tracy tomorrow.”
“Could I come?”
“You would need to get your parents’ permission.”
“All right, can I use your phone?” She asked. I gave her permission, and in a couple of minutes she was back to tell me that she could go. “My parents say that as long as I stay with you I can go.”
“You’ll have to go and get some things, and I’ll talk to your parents.” It turned out that they did give her permission, and she slept at my house that night in order to be ready for the next morning. We packed flashlights, camouflage, and plenty of grapefruit.
