The End of Detective Schofield? – Page 2

“Well, I’ve just made it look like I’ve quit the detective business for good. I have Tracy and Tricia convinced of it. I even deleted my story, and I’ve put my office up on the market to make it look like I’m really serious.”
“So, what’s this about finding the gem?”
“That’s the beauty of it. They’re after me because they think that I’m on the case. Well, I’m not anymore! I’m through as far as the museum’s concerned. Now I can go undercover and see if I can find out anything without involving my family.”
“That’s brilliant! But what’s my part in all this?”
“I want you to work with me.”
“No. I can’t. What about the baby?”
“The baby’s not due for another couple of months. By then, I’ll have caught the criminals and got back the gem.”
“But Adam, I’ve got a wife and baby!”
“All the more reason for us to be careful not to get caught. Besides, we best not start until a week or so. That will give them time to see that I have quit and to try to sell the gem. We’ll come in as buyers. It’ll be just you and me. Just like the old days. What do you say?”
“I don’t know. It sounds kinda risky.”
“Noah, don’t tell me married life has finally gotten the better of you!”
“All right. When do we start?”
“Next week. I’ll contact you then.”
“I think that we should let Laura in on this.”
“Why is that?”
“So that she can be our cover. It’s not going to look that good if you keep disappearing from your home. You can come of here, and Laura will cover for us.”
“Good idea. I’ll talk to Theresa while you tell it to Laura.”
“Fine.” I went to distract Theresa while Noah broke the idea to Laura. She agreed, and Noah signaled that I could return home. I did so, and was there in time for lunch. Walking through the door, I went to the closet to hang up my coat. I did, and Karin called that lunch was on the table. Tracy and Kristin were in the music room practicing, and didn’t hear her. I relayed the message to them. They said that they were coming.
“Any luck?” Tracy asked.
“A little. I’m going to try again on Monday, though.”
“Oh.” She said. We sat down and ate. Later that afternoon, we went to Marie’s to practice. It was an interesting day.
