Kristin and Katie: Our Girlfriends? – Page 3

“Whoa, I don’t know if that’s such a good idea.” I commented. “Okay, we’re going over to Noah’s house at six and we won’t be back until ten tonight. You’d better tell your parents that you’ll be spending the night here. We’ll grab some clothes for you on our way over to Noah’s house.”
“Thanks, Dad.” Kristin said. They both took off to pick out what they were going to wear, and to get all giddy about tonight. Kids, I thought, what are you going to do with them?
The time came for us to drive over to Katie’s house, and I went with her to make sure that it was okay with her parents. We walked up to the door of this one story house, and she opened the door. Walking inside, I saw her mother, who kindly offered me something to eat. I declined, and went straight to my inquiry. “Is it all right for Katie to spend the night over at my house tonight?”
“I don’t see any problem with that. Now run along and get your things, Katie.”
“Thank you, Mrs. Keyser. She and Kristin are such good friends.”
“Yes, they are, aren’t they.” Katie returned with some clothes, a toothbrush, and a pillow.
“I’m ready, Mom.” She said to her mother.
“All right, dear. All I ask is that you have her here tomorrow morning at nine so that she can be ready for church.”
“You have my word, Mrs. Keyser. Thank you.” We turned around and left the house. Returning to the car, we put her stuff in the trunk and continued on to Noah’s house. Once there, we all went to the basement, where the metamorphoses were to take place. Katie and Kristin immediately went to work on each other, while Noah and I worked on ourselves with the help of a couple mirrors.
When we were finished, I looked at the two girls and shook my head. “Now see what you’ve done.” I said to Noah.
“What? What have I done?” He inquired, examining what he was wearing then looking at my face. Following my stare, he looked at the two girls.
“These two think that this is normal! They think that this is the way all families are, constantly trying to be what they’re not, risking life and limb for jewels.”
“Don’t forget girls.”
“That’s just what I mean. They’ll probably grow up and expect their husband to be like us! That’s not right, is it?”
“Listen, Adam,” he said, putting his hand on my shoulder. “This is what you do, and are happy with doing. You could have told your daughter anything. You could have told her you were a greeting card salesman, but you didn’t. You told her the truth. I think that by the time she’s serious about a husband, she’ll think about things in a different way. She’ll understand that her someone might not be like you, and she may then want a stable house for her kids, just like you want one for yours.”
“But that’s just it. I can’t promise them anything. In the next few minutes, I could be shot and dead. Where does that leave her? And what about Tracy?!!”
“They understand. Don’t worry about it.”
“I may not be worried, but it’s always in the back of my head. I mean, just think about that time I got shot in the leg last summer, I could’ve died.”
“You could’ve, but you didn’t. As you told me when you wanted to start this thing, a wife and kid are all the more reason to be cautious. Now,” he said, turning to the girls, “Let’s take our ‘girlfriends’ out on the town.”
“All right. Which one’s mine?”
