Walking in a Winter Wonderland–Page 1
Aug/110
The next morning, I got up. I was sorer than the night before. Opening the door, I walked down the hall. Opening it, I peered inside. Kendall was asleep, lying sideways facing the other wall. Looking around her room I saw two suitcases packed in the corner. Her closet was opened with mostly empty hangers in it. The drawers of her desk were also open and looked empty. Leaving, I shut the door. Walking into the bathroom, I looked inside the cabinets in there. Most of her belonging that I had seen the night before were gone. I washed my face. A few remnants of the pain I felt the night before were still there. Finishing getting ready, I went to the kitchen and picked up the phone. Dialing my home phone number, I got Karin. “Hello?”
“Hello, Karin, this is Adam.”
“Hello Adam. How’s the weather?”

Out of the Silent Planet
May/110
Having recently read through the Chronicles of Narnia with my kids, and having a some Christmas money to spend, I decided that I would try out the Space Trilogy from C.S. Lewis. The first book in this series is Out of the Silent Planet
which starts out with a character, Ransom, being tricked into going on a long space voyage to, what I have deduced, is Mars.
What’s interesting about this trip is that, in the process, our character finds out that the planet is much different than he expects. His captors believe that the natives want a human sacrifice, but what Ransom finds out is that it’s much more complicated than that.
Lewis works in Christian themes into this work, though nothing so blatant as that which is found in The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe.

We arrived at her house. I showed her where the receiver for the bug was and I went to her bathroom to take a shower. A few minutes later, I came out. The injuries that they had made were now very visible. It felt good to be out of makeup, but some of it got into the wound on my face, and it stung. Kendall got up and came over when she saw me. “Ouch! Does that hurt?”
“Only when I smile — OW!” I said.
“Here, let me fix it up.” She said. Running back into the bathroom, she grabbed some things and came back out. She put some hydrogen peroxide on the cut. That stung. The bruise she covered with ice until the swelling started to go down. “Tricia said that they were unable to switch the gem. She also said that the couple was going to Milwaukee, Wisconsin tomorrow. Does that mean we have to follow?”
“Yes. OW– Can you be packed tonight?”
“Sure.”
“Then we’ll leave first thing in the morning. I want to get there before they do. Did you happen to hear where they were staying?”
“Yes. I wrote it down on this paper.”
“Good. We can bug that hotel room also. I’ll go over first thing in the morning and remove — OWW!” I said, as she just applied another coat of the peroxide.
“Why don’t I go over? Where did you put it?”
“On the lamp. Room 153.”
“Okay. How did you get in the first place?”
“Told the man I was Tracy’s husband.”
“I don’t think that that will work for me.”
“Probably not, but you’ll come up with something.”
“Right now, I think I’ll get to packing. I’m in the room at the end of the hall if you need anything more.”
“Thanks again.”
“Don’t mention it.” She left. I walked into my room, shut the door, and sat on my bed in great pain. Reaching inside my suitcase, I dug out my Bible. Flipping open to the book mark in Deuteronomy 31, I read the passage. One verse struck me as interesting. Verse 6 stated: “Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the LORD thy God, he [it is] that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.” That was very encouraging. After praying for all the things the Lord had done for me, for my family, and for what I had to do in the days to come (yes, for Kendall too), I pulled open the sheets of the bed and fell asleep.

About ten minutes later I saw the two of them enter into the club and go over to a door in the back.”I think that there is where the meeting is held,” I said to Kendall.
“You’re probably right,” she said, turning to look in that direction.
“Shall we go, sis?”
“Surely, brother,” I got up and we walked over to the door.Knocking on it, a slit opened up and a man, I certainly wouldn’t call him a gentleman, opened a slit in it.
“Sir.”
“Yes, we would like to get in on the bidding for the DG.”
“The DG sir?”
“Yes,” I got closer to the door.”The Glowing Gem.”
“I’m sorry sir. This is a private party.Only those with an invitation are welcome.”
“Well, it looks as though we don’t get in.”Kendall said to me.
“All right. Thanks anyway,” I said.We turned around and started to walk away. Two men walked up to us.
“Excuse me, little lady,” one of the men said, pushing Kendall to a chair.”But we’d like to have a word with this man a minute.”Taking me outside, the two men punched me a couple of times in the gut and face, then threw me in the garbage dumpster. They laughed, closed the lid, and went back inside.I tensed my muscles in order to get enough strength to get out of the garbage, but the pain made me relax as I smelled the left-overs of the food and drink that had been thrown out.
About ten minutes later, I heard a voice calling, “SAM!”
“Over here, Kendall!”I called back.Opening the lid, she looked back and forth, then inside.
“Sam, what happened?”
“Those two gentlemen are just lucky I didn’t want to hurt them.I was just letting them think that they had got — OWW!”
“Where does it hurt?”
“A better question is where doesn’t it hurt?! What happened to Tracy and Tricia?”
“I don’t know. They left the room a different way than they came in.The two men were watching me all the time.”
“Okay. Why don’t you help me out of here.”
“All right,” she said, reaching her hand into the garbage dumpster. It was small, and I realized that my best bet was probably to help myself out.I grabbed onto the top of the dumpster. She then grabbed a hold of my hand, and yanked me out of there.
“How did you do that?”
“Karate school. It’s a really good thing that they didn’t bring me out here with you.I don’t think that I could have had your self control!”Trying to free the food that was clinging to me with my hands, I headed toward the car.She followed.”So what’s our next step?”
“Well, I planted a bug in Tracy and Tricia’s hotel room. We’ll find out what happened when we get back.Hey Kendall?”
“Yes Sam?”
“Remind me never to get the chicken sandwich again.”
“Yes Sam,” she said.I put something on the seat of the car so that I wouldn’t get it all yucky.

“I get it. You want me to go out with you for a cover. It sounds like something you’d find a TV sitcom.”
“Or inside a cousin’s mind. But you see, that helps complete the disguise if we ever bump into them, which I figure I might have to do if I am to find out all that they plan.”
“Where are you staying?”
“In a hotel, why?”
“Why don’t you move out here? That way if they get suspicious…”
“But the people around here know you. What if they saw us together? They’d think that something is up.”
“I could tell them that you were my friend or brother.”
“Yeah, and then when Tracy and Tricia inquire… Hey! That might just work!”
“Hey, I’m smart.”
“Okay, you don’t have to rub it in! I’ll be your brother.”
“And since no brother of mine would stay in a hotel while I have this big house, you’ll have to come here with me.”
“All right. I’ll go back to my hotel room and put on some make up. Hopefully you will not recognize me when I come back. That way your brother will look like he just showed up and you can meet me like your brother.”
“Now there’s a good idea.”
“Okay. Bye,” I said. She showed me to the door and I left the house. Driving into town, I drove to the hotel, put on some make up, returned the key, switched cars so that “Kendall’s brother” could not be linked with my car, and drove back to her house. I drove into her driveway and honked the horn. She came running to the door. Looking outside, she saw me getting out of the car.
“Sam!!” She exclaimed, running over to me. She threw her arms around me and I grabbed her around the waist.
“Kendall, it’s me, Adam,” I whispered.
“I knew that, I was just acting,” She whispered back.”
“Oh,” I whispered. “How are ya doing Kendall?”
“Fine,” She said, letting me loose of her grip. She put her arm in mine and we went to the trunk to get my stuff. We went inside the house, and sat down.
“We’ll put you in this room over here,” she said, showing me to a room down a hall. I took my suitcase in and put it on the bed.
“I don’t know how long I’ll need this room. From what I’ve gathered by listening to Tracy and Tricia, they may be moving soon. In fact, they are due back in Nanopolis next Saturday. They may leave here at any time!”
“Oh. Well, it’s yours as long as you want it,” she turned to leave.
“Kendall?” I said. She turned back around. “Thanks,” I said, with a smile. She smiled.
“Oh, by the way, brother. You’ll have to do better with your make up than that. I could tell it was you.”
“Huh? How?”
“I’m a girl. If I can see through it, be sure that Tracy can see through it!”
“Good point. Can you…” I motioned to my face.
“Sure.” She said. She led me into the bathroom. It was pretty big. Then again, they say that everything is big in Florida. Or was that Texas? Anyway, she made me up, we put on some fancy clothes, and I escorted her out to my car. Boy was she a “knock-out.” I drove the car to the club where the meeting was to be held and I escorted Kendall inside. We found a table, and waited for Tracy and Tricia to make an appearance.
